Frequently Asked Questions

What is Crime Alert?
A grass roots program that helps police solve crimes and arrest wanted suspects while saving thousands of dollars in investigation costs. A program that allows citizens to provide vital information to law enforcement while remaining completely anonymous. Pays callers cash rewards of up to $1,000.00 when their information results in arrests. A program that, since it has started in 1979, has resulted in thousands of arrests and crimes solved in the greater Sacramento Area.

Who runs the program?
The Citizens' Crime Alert Reward Program is governed by a Board of Directors composed of non-law enforcement volunteers, recruited from the greater Sacramento area. The board is assisted by a non-voting advisory panel made up of representatives from the local area law enforcement agencies. The board meet once a month to review cases submitted for reward consideration, to make policy decisions as necessary, and to discuss matters, such as fund raising and publicity. The day to day operation of the program is carried out by a staff composed of employees of the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento Sheriff's department who provide twenty-four hours a day seven days a week phone coverage on the two hotline phone numbers. The Police and Sheriff's Department personnel assigned to the program are the only paid staff. Their salaries are paid by their respective agencies.

How does the program operate?
Law enforcement agencies needing information on the location of wanted felons, or unsolved crimes, submit their information to the program's operating staff. Request accepted for inclusion in the program are, in turn, forwarded on a weekly basis to local area print and broadcast media. People with information on these cases are encouraged to call one of two hot line telephone numbers. Callers are given confidential code numbers for future identification. They are not asked for their names or any other identifying information. Their information is then passed on to the appropriate law enforcement agency. If the information results in an arrest, the Crime Alert Board determines the amount of the reward to be paid. Callers are paid in cash, at a time and place they select.

Where does the reward money come from?
Reward funds consist of contributions from individuals, businesses, and special events arranged for or authorized by the board of directors. The Citizens' Crime Alert Reward Program qualifies for tax exempt status under Section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code. All donations are tax deductible. You can help, contributions are needed to provide a continuing source of funds for the reward program. Your contribution will help make Sacramento a safer community and a more enjoyable place to live and do business. The overwhelmingly majority of the donated funds goes towards the cash rewards payouts, used to get criminals off our streets.
